Michael Mann Did "Hide the Decline" but it's No Big Deal

Hide the Decline II

By Elmer Beauregard

I was checking out the blogoshere and latest on Michael Mann and how he has been cleared of all wrong doing. I noticed that they are now admitting he did hide the decline, but now their saying that its no big deal.

An End to Climategate? Penn State Clears Michael Mann
Wyatt Andrews, CBS News

Tree data showing global temps going down didn’t mesh with actual recorded temperatures, so pains were taken, (most of the time disclosed, but sometimes not) to use actual temp recordings and “hide the decline” from trees. Sometimes, on the so called hockey stick charts that show global temps as a flat line and then a sharp upward spike are indeed mixing tree ring data and actual temps.

The five key leaked emails from UEA’s Climatic Research Unit
Fred Pearce, guardian.co.uk

Jones and Mike Mann had been adding real temperatures to the end longer graphs of temperature estimates based on tree rings. The only thing being “hidden” was tree ring data that did not match reality.

This last statement is remarkable because it shows that what is being done in the realm of “Climate Science” is not science at all but rather politics.

SO THIS IS WHAT THEY MEAN BY “SCIENTIFIC METHOD”?!?! MY, HOW TIMES AND METHODS HAVE CHANGED SINCE I WAS IN SCHOOL.

It’s like graphing opinion polls showing flat support for a party and adding to the end the actual result of an election, and then saying: “public support is growing at 10%/year which means there won’t be a need for an election in 5 years time”.

Tree ring data and measured (not actual) global data is as different as opinion polls and election results. Not everyone votes, not all changes in tree rings are due to temperature. They’re different measurements, and just like an opinion poll is a very pour second best to an election – but better than nothing when there is none (subject to a lot of bias – like phone polls tend to bias toward the opinion of those with phones – which aint much good in a country with few phones), so tree rings are a useful indication of past temperatures but very very second best.

But the key thing is that the change from one type of measurement to another clearly means that the removal of an underlying bias may give the appearance of a dramatic change which only exists because of the change in measurement. What Michael Mann did, was to highlight the apparent change in temperature due to change from tree-ring to measurement stations WITHOUT HIGHLIGHTING THAT THE METHOD OF TEMPERATURE ESTIMATION HAD CHANGED.

This may not be legal fraud, but it is scientific fraud.

Dan: I heard Rush Limbaugh quote you today! He was talking about the convicted felon voter fraud story. Nice Job! I heard him say your name, and I was like, “hey he’s quoting our very own Dan McGrath!!!”

  4. Hal Groar July 12, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

I heard it also! It took a while for the news to get to Florida I guess! Another notch in your belt there Danno! Good job!

  5. Dan July 12, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

I was as surprised as you were – and then the phones started ringing and didn’t stop all day. I’ve lost track of how many interviews I did. I later learned that Rush was trying to get me on the phone but no one was at the office to take the call at the time. A missed opportunity.

By the way, welcome back Neil!

Dan, you hit “Drudge” as well. Kudo’s! Welcome back Neil!

OMG… Dan is an expert on “convicted felon voter fraud”?! Now I have heard EVERYTHING.

    Here’s the real fraud:

Indeed, no one insists that weapon contractors sacrifice for the economic sake of the country. On the contrary, whatever amount they ask for—they get.

There is something terribly and morally obscene about this picture.

History has shown that when the few rich and powerful rulers horde most of the wealth, it inevitably produces extreme poverty for the masses. A country that is dirt poor is an ugly and dehumanizing sight. To make a long repetitive history short, this form of unequal distribution of wealth nearly always results in a two class system: The few get rich and the masses are left with nothing. No one, however, admires the rich under these circumstances. They are despised and hated.

What made the United States the envy of the world, the beacon of light to other countries was our middle class economy.

The MIC and Oil companies are busy decimating the middle class. And you all tilt at windmills. We are truly DOOMED.

Dan, please keep up the excellent work. We all appreciate it more than you will ever know.

Yes, the vast right-wing conspiracy needs all of its minions, churning out that irrelevant and sometimes dishonest rhetoric. Yes, continue doing that while Rome (USA) “figuratively” burns to the ground around you, and us.

And then you can still blame everyone else for America’s demise. You will still be clueless, but you will have plenty of scapegoats to target.

The power of delusion is scary. All empires share the same fate, ours is and will be no different. You people are proof postive of that.

I’m completely depressed now and hope to never return to this dead end site of the know-nothings.

I think the reason why you are getting frustrated Rob, is because no one knows what you are talking about….. including you! The things that you believe are all wrong, that’s got to be frustrating. You have immersed yourself into the world of delusional thought, where nothing you do matters because there is some straw man that is always going to ruin it for you, be it the elites, or those dastardly Republicans. Your not even right about never returning to this site! Why even say that? We all know that’s not going to happen.
What you should do, and I think I have suggested this before, is write down say, 5 of your most strongly held beliefs, then, set about finding some evidence of their factuality. Question them, and prove them to yourself that they are correct. Don’t just take some blogger’s word from buzzflash that you are right. Prove it to yourself first, then you can perhaps persuade others.

      • Rob N. Hood August 17, 2010 at 7:56 am #

You should take your own advice. But it wouldn’t change your beliefs would it? I do what you say I should do everyday, like breathing. You are the ones who ae delusional and adhere to only your delusional beliefs. Your side has always been wrong, throughout history. You just can’t see it because you are the ones who are blinded by some kind of brain wired bias.

There are liars and propagandists out there, and most get paid much better than you or I. They are good at it. That’s the point. Simply look at who your lords of wisdom are and who pays them. That alone should tell you much or all you really need to know to figure it out. but don’t stop there, dig even deeper. Who has some moral authority? Who is at least trying to do the right things for humans and the planet. The modern right-wing is for one thing and one thing only. Enrichment of the elite, and subjugation for everyone else. Ok that’s two things…

Ok, I guess I’m back. I’m not completely chilled out, but I have chillaxed a bit. I am not happy at all about the climate crooks getting their jobs back. What a whitewash! I can’t say that I am surprised though. How could you expect any other outcome given the people who did the “investigation”? It’s like having a jury made up of your girlfriend, your cousin, and your Mom, and a few of their friends! “The jury finds the defendant… cute, adorable, and totally awesome dude!” What a crock!!!!!

    • Dan McGrath July 15, 2010 at 1:36 am #

      Funny and true.

    Welcome back my friend!

    • Rob N. Hood July 19, 2010 at 1:29 pm #

Yes, hilarious…Not. We are dealing with the effects of corporatism. Creeping corporate takeover of all the things that make(made)living a good and honorable life possible.

It’s a twenty or fifty year decline, depending on your point tof view, and we Americans finally shook some barnacles off our collective ass and opted for Obama.

But it’s the system that is infected with people (Obama too unfortunately) who are favored by and even placed in position by corporations. Aided and abetted by a crooked electoral process and by certain elected officials that were in power three times from Reagan to Bush 2.

Caught you on the Jason Lewis show Dan. That was nice! He gave you some time! My only request…use a land line! Other then that you did a great job! Even corrected Mr. Lewis. (Not an easy task!) I like his show, very intelligent. You did well!

    • Dan July 15, 2010 at 10:22 pm #

In retrospect, I wish I hadn’t corrected Jason. Was the connection bad? Sounded crystal clear on my end.

  15. paul wenum July 15, 2010 at 9:04 pm #

Excellent job Dan. Keep it up!

  16. paul wenum July 18, 2010 at 10:04 pm #

Jason needs to be corrected to keep his head straight. Listen to him every night. No apology should be needed for which “Mr. Right” should agree. Again, excellent job and explanation that Minnesota Majority was not out to change the election. Just setting the bar for future elections. I’m glad the media picked up on your hard work and took it not only regional but national. Maybe other States will start fly specking the votes submitted. I doubt that ACORN or their new alias does. Keep up the good work. It is needed more than you realize.

I am a speck of dust and very humble. Most of the time. I stand to be corrected, at any moment. You have yet to accomplish that. That’s all. It is you who feels superior and infallible. Just like the Catholic Church. And look how wrong they are about MANY things…

  20. paul wenum August 1, 2010 at 7:54 pm #

A comment is not even warranted.
