2nd Coldest U.S. Winter in 35 Years

Cooling WorldBy Roy W. Spenser, ph. D.

The primary winter months of December, January, and February averaged over the contiguous 48 United States were the 2rd coldest winter in the last 35 years. The average temperature of 32.2 deg. F was barely edged out by the slightly colder winter (32.0 deg. F) of 2009-2010.

The analysis is based upon ~350 NOAA/NWS stations that measure temperatures every 6 hours (or more frequently), many located at airports. The data I use are adjusted for average spurious urban heat island (UHI) warming that increases with population density around the thermometer site. That relationship is shown at the end of this article.

You’re confusing weather with climate. It was cold in the EASTERN side of the US this year. Alaska was very, very warm and the rest of the globe had above average temperatures. Learn the difference.

No. Most of us understand that weather and climate are both different and also always in flux, but on different cycles. The global warming doom-sayers, however point to every odd weather event as proof of their cooky theory. We point out odd weather events that contradict the theory on occasion in an effort to point out what should be obvious to anyone that’s had an education on history or geology.

Care to guess what that point might be?

Not to be rude, but i fail to see how this shows the falseness of global warming at all. The cooling or heating of the Earth has not shown to be linear in the slightest. How does one cold winter this year, in a small area, attempt to disprove something that may be as old as the Industrial Revolution?

    • Neilio May 8, 2014 at 9:20 pm #

First of all, it’s anthropogenic global warming. I think it’s important to understand the terms with some precision. Global warming has happened many times before, and so has global cooling. Anthropogenic global warming is the theory that an unnatural amount of CO2, not carbon, added by mankind might cause unnatural warming leading to catastrophic changes to the climate. And that is the nub of this piece. AGW was supposed to cause warming. And even with natural variation in regional climates, how can we have the 2nd coldest winter in 35 years? If the theory of AGW is correct, and true, don’t you think we would be seeing milder winters, and warmer summers everywhere? That is what the theory of AGW has predicted after all. That, I think, is why this story is at least relevant.

      • Nick May 9, 2014 at 3:23 pm #

That might seem true, but you have to understand the concept of Polar Cells. You see, the heating of the Earth causes warmer air to be created on the surface of the earth, and in the lower atmosphere. Due to hot airs low pressure, it will rise higher into the atmosphere. Then it will be pulled around in a convection current due to the cold air rushing down to take its place. This occurs naturally in three major areas in the atmosphere. But because of the extra heating of the earth, the air down low will get even warmer and cause more updrafts. This creates a larger convection current than what is normal, sending very large amounts of cold, dense air down into the polar regions. This then forced down the Polar winds lower than normal in the winter months, causing the record breaking temperatures. As you can see, it’s not so simple as a linear progression of temperature increases, but has many intricacies.

Wow, that is some real gymnastics there Nick. I am not a meteorologist so I will admit that I don’t know for sure if this is a correct description of a process or not. But I think what you are saying is not correct. Mainly because I read this, http://geography.about.com/od/climate/a/highlowpressure.htm and it does not describe the same process as you describe. But I lean towards it more than your 5 back handsprings with the triple back flip.

Being curious, as is my nature, I have been doing some reading on what is known about the polar vortex. It is actually when the polar vortex is weak that we get outbreaks of cold air, not when it is a strong vortex. You are right about one thing, the climate has many intricacies. But if you look at some of my posts from years past you might notice that I have said many times that we do not know all of the variables that affect the climate. I usually bring that up when I talk about computer models. Computer models are only as accurate as the known variables that are input into the model. They can not calculate what is unknown, and subsequently not present in the model’s parameters. I believe it is one of the main reasons that the models are wrong.

What we are dealing with is a public that cherishes it’s fears . Anybody familiar with product sales knows this . It’s the audience that is always and abundantly willing to yield it’s 2 cents worth without the muscle to enforce . If you want to believe professional wrestling is real , that’s your business , I’m OK with that , but when you come banging at my door and insist it’s real , almost with a threat , that’s where I draw the line . I think we are all finally sobering up to this “Global Warming” hoax that needs to be officially shot down and kept down as the world needs to think about how it’s going to house and feed the new residents that keep mysteriously showing up . Now there’s a problem we created all by ourselves and can take full credit for …. Overpopulation .

You nitwit! Climate change doesn’t mean we wont have record lows but that that ratio of record highs to record lows will increase. Not only will there be more record highs but less record lows. Educate yourselves.

Ok, Megan, it is cyclical. The last year, and this year, have had more record lows than highs. The 80’s and 90’s had a lot of record highs, but if you go back farther you would see that the 60’s and 70’s had more record lows. And the 40’s and 50’s highs. It flip-flops every 20 years or so. We mere humans have very short life spans compared to the climate, which is constantly changing by the way, a fact that you fervent warmist theorists tend to ignore. So how does one identify human caused climate change when, if you compare the changes in the climate from the 1940’s through today to the geological climate record, the climate has had many rapid changes? Do you deny that there are natural changes to the climate? You show me what portion of the current, constantly changing, climate is the human caused portion, and I’ll give you a cookie.

      Hey, check this out. http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/more-settled-science/

I think it is pretty obvious that nobody knows what will happen, when it will happen, or why it will happen.

Ok lets look at climate change how warm is it at the north and south pole right now today, second water freeses at 32 degrees it currently is 45 degrees in wisconsin on may 19, so how much ice is currently melting on the poles any guess?

    • Neilio May 19, 2014 at 6:51 pm #

David, David, David…. It doesn’t matter what the facts are. This is not a factual, scientific debate. Haven’t you heard the debate is over anyway? What matters is that this issue of global warmingclimatechangeclimatedisruption is just the vehicle needed to bring about political change, bring down capitalism, and shape the whole world into a worker’s paradise, and socialist utopia. It doesn’t matter if they’re right or wrong. They are not concerned about truth, or evidence. They are concerned about seeing their political goals achieved, no matter what. That’s what this is all about.

I know I was being being a smart### did you know to all the global warming people out there that water when frozen expands that is why ice floats, also it displaces the same amount of mass of water, therfore if you put an ice cube in a glass of water when it melts the water level in the glass does not rise, so if the north pole ice cap would melt in its -40 degree weather it would not raise the sea levels one inch or micro inch, the last time I checked ice will not melt untill it reaches 33 degrees, so how warm is it in the north pole should I be seeling bekinies to the eskomos

    • Alex Walker June 2, 2014 at 8:28 pm #

Not all of the ice is afloat in the poles, there are landmasses holding up large amounts of ice that is melting. So, the water level will rise. Also, lets say people dismiss climate change and it turns out to be real? Can you prove that is isn’t happening? That it isn’t man-made? Anyway, we should work to lower pollution so we don’t suffocate before we find the answer. If we don’t fix this problem, the over population will fix itself. In fact we might have under population, not anyone left at all.(It’s bikinis, not bekinies)

      • Neilio October 10, 2014 at 5:13 pm #

Alex, I think it is rather clear that there is no warming which pretty much decimates the theory of AGW. You can hang on to it if you want to but it’s like the invisible dog on a leash. (There really is no dog).
