Extreme Weather Blown Away from Unexpected Direction

Give us back our doom, plead hippies

By Andrew Orlowski

Allegations of a “surge” in “extreme” weather events has been quashed by a surprising source – the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“There is medium evidence and high agreement that long-term trends in normalized losses have not been attributed to natural or anthropogenic climate change,” writes the IPCC in its new Special Report on Extremes (SREX) published today.

“The statement about the absence of trends in impacts attributable to natural or anthropogenic climate change holds for tropical and extratropical storms and tornados,” the authors conclude, adding for good measure that “absence of an attributable climate change signal in losses also holds for flood losses”.

Roger Pielke Jr, a professor at the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado Boulder, and a blogger who aligns himself with the “debate is over” camp, welcomed the IPCC report.

Whaaaat?? Uh oh… end of a conspriacy I guess. Like I said- close it down, everyone go home… (except for the darn”hippies” of course… seriously, does anyone use that term in a serious way anymore, really??!! Answer: not since 1976).

Now that just says it all for me. I am surprised at the source, though it could just mean that the IPCC has read the writing on the wall and has decided to attempt to reclaim some credability, that’s my guess.
But think about what they are saying here. They are stating that all of the predictions from the last couple of years about global warming causing all of this crazy weather are all wrong. There is an “absence of trends in impacts attributable to natural or anthropogenic climate change”. !!!!! That is just amazing to me that the IPCC said that. That’s like Bill Clinton saying “yeah, I did her”!

Thank you for the autopsy of another Fox Bogus Reporting event

I think this is going to be the year of the sceptic. I mean, we have IPCC saying that the latest AGW predictions of increased weather anomalies due to climate change is hogwash. And now there is this: The EPA’s office of the inspector general is going to look into the EPA’s CO2 endangerment findings!

    http://junksciencecom.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/epa-ig-to-inhofe.pdf
“This memorandum is to notify you that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) plans to begin an evaluation of EPA’s management of selected federal advisory committees. We are initiating this assignment based on requests from Senator James M. Inhofe, Ranking Member, Committee on Environment and Public Works, who asked that we review EPA’s management of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) and the Advisory Council on Clean Air Compliance Analysis (ACCACA).”

Yup! A good year so far.

The U.S. is the greatest snow job of all time, actually more a hologram than a country (Matrix?). We are trapped inside, with little to no knowledge that the world (U.S. included) was not what corporate/government propaganda, or just everyday cultural propaganda, says it is. We watched kinfolk and neighbors vote repeatedly against their own interests, and there seems to be little we can do about it.

You’re right. I bow to your wisdom and beg forgiveness for my ignorance.

I have to chuckle. You argue about a nature cause. Get back to reality such as the economy. jobs et al. Enjoy your day.

  6. Rob N. Hood April 3, 2012 at 6:59 am #

What? You think AGW is a (worldwide, i.e. huge) hoax and you become sarcastic about a logical statement that requires only a modicum of reason? Par for your illogical course.

  7. Rob N. Hood April 3, 2012 at 8:30 am #

And Joe has stated practically the EXACT SAME THING…(Neil too for that matter)- and yet he “has to chuckle”?! Why is that? Why can you believe pretty much the same thing, and then belittle (or try to) someone who states it, someone who you know you otherwise disagree with about other things. How is that kind of mentality possible? I don’t get it.

It’s a rigid stubborness that is borderline pathological.

The downward spiral of societal trust is well founded, as aptly demonstrated by OWS and just less so by the Tea Party (R.I.P.). The monied interests have captured the political process. The regulated have captured the regulators. Wall Street has always controlled the Federal Reserve (which is not a reserve, nor is it Federal, it is a private corporation). Corporations and the wealthiest among us select the politicians that will best serve their interests. The governing elite of psychopathic bankers, corrupt politicians, and powerful mega-corporations create crises, then save us from the crises they created, while accumulating more control, wealth and power. This perpetual swindle has been going on for decades and has reached its zenith, again. Income inequality has reached the extreme levels last seen in the 1930s. The capitalism storyline has grown old and tired. Complete systematic capture is the reason for those at the top reaping all the benefits of our dysfunctional economic system.

P.S.: contrary to some wrong-headed beliefs, the above is not a call for communism. If you happen to believe that, stick your head in a bucket of cold water, take two aspirin and call your nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant in the morning.

  11. Rob N. Hood April 4, 2012 at 8:58 am #

Although… I personally wouldn’t mind trying communism in its most purest form. But humans being what they are no only has that never occurred it will probably never be possible, unfortunately. Thing is- the current form of capitalism, which has been with us for a fairly long time, is imploding, as all systems eventually do, and WE WILL need an alternative. But again with human nature the way it is, things will get much much worse before the above mentioned waterheads will be miserable enough to smarten up and join the rest of the human race in working together for a better world.

That’s what the one lemming who stayed behind said about all the others. Sometimes the boys (and girls) who cry wolf are correct.

•Last month was the warmest March on record (records go back to 1895) at 51.1 degrees; this is 8.6 degrees above the 20th century average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
•January-March was the warmest first quarter on record; the average temperature of 42 degrees was 6 degrees above average.
•April 2011-March 2012 was the warmest stretch of those 12 months on record; at 55.4 degrees, that period was 2.6 degrees above average.
•In March, 15,292 records were broken for warmth; 7,775 were new daytime highs in cities across the country and 7,517 were new nighttime highs.

“The average reading of 0.7 degrees below zero F took Rivne to 20 degrees below normal… The three weeks in Russia averaged almost 25 degrees below normal in Yashkul, near the Caspian Sea. At least one all-time record low temperature may have been set when Astrakhan, Russia, hit 29 degrees below zero F early in February.” That large of an area of temperatures below 10 to 20 degrees is rarely seen worldwide.”

“Across the Atlantic, much of Europe is suffering through a winter of historic — and deadly — proportions. Over 600 people have died from the intense cold that has gripped the continent over the past few weeks, with the most severe toll recorded in Eastern Europe. Over 5,000 Russians have suffered from hypothermia or frostbite while the country has seen 20 days of unusually cold weather when temperatures fell 13°F to 25°F below normal and Moscow on Feb. 13 endured temperatures of -4°F. (It could be worse though — temperatures in the northern Russian city of Toko fell to -63°F.) In Central Europe, the commercially vital Danube River froze for hundreds of miles, from Austria to its mouth in the Black Sea, forcing officials to take chain saws to the ice. Things are so bad in Hungary that the central bank has been compressing billions of old notes into briquettes that can be burned for heat. If the climate’s still warming word didn’t get to Europe.

So how can two parts of the world be experiencing such radically different winters? It’s not climate change. The weather pattern that’s bringing all of that frigid air to Europe — and holding it in place — is largely due to a naturally occurring climatic pattern called the Arctic Oscillation (AO), which describes how air pressure is distributed over the Arctic regions and the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere. The pattern comes in two phases: a negative one where there is high air pressure over the North Pole and low pressure at the mid-latitudes, and a positive phase when the pressure systems has reversed. Essentially, the AO describes how the winds are blowing — and as the AO changes, it can bring warmer or colder wintertime weather to the U.S. and Europe.”

If/when the gulf stream “treadmill” is changed, we are all in big trouble. Including a much colder Europe, and a warmer drier US. Many people will starve due to lack of farmland in US due to dry conditions (dust bowl) and the freezing of underfed people in Europe. But this could be Gaia’s way of balancing herself and shedding some of the over-populated carbon-based entities, as she has done in the past from time to time.

  17. Joe April 11, 2012 at 9:31 pm #

Mr. Hood, you are an expert on climate? The gulfstream as stated my the experts as well as sun activity, El Nino, El nina are the culprits, or so they say. I thought you “Degree” was in Physic? “Analysis” the data.

Did you even read the report? Oh, and “skeptic,” not “sceptic.”

  20. Rob N. Hood April 13, 2012 at 7:01 am #

  21. Joe April 14, 2012 at 9:17 pm #

Then simply don’t profess to know. I was simply curious to see if anything changed. My observation says, No.

Patrick Michaels, a climate scientist at the libertarian CATO Institute, said Earth’s climate over time has gone through natural cycles. While he acknowledged anthropogenic climate change is occurring, Michaels said the issue is how sensitive global temperatures are to fluctuations in carbon dioxide: “It’s not the heat, it’s the sensitivity.”

“They’re absolutely right, climate changes naturally, it’s constantly changing for natural reasons,” said Maureen Raymo of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

However, Raymo noted that the natural changes caused by volcanic eruptions, other geologic activities and variations in Earth’s orbit take eons to unfold. Humans have been putting additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels for only a century or so. And there is a lag between the time when carbon dioxide gets into the air and the full warming effects are felt.
