Binding climate change deal is impossible after Barack Obama's election defeat, says John Prescott

lord-prescottBarack Obama’s setback in the US mid-term elections has killed of any hope of securing a legally binding global climate change deal, John Prescott has said

From the London Telegraph

Negotiators should ditch hopes of enforcable targets on emmissions reductions and push instead for a voluntary framework at the upcoming Cancun summit, the former deputy prime minister said.

After President Barack Obama’s ”shellacking” at the hands of Republican opponents in mid-term elections, there was no prospect of the US Congress approving legal requirements to cut greenhouse gas emissions, said Lord Prescott, who was a key UK negotiator at the Kyoto global warming conference in 1997.

Was it ever really that much in doubt? Perhaps some atual words from the Great FDR are in order-

“For there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy.

The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are:

Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.

Jobs for those who can work.

Security for those who need it.

The ending of special privilege for the few.

The preservation of civil liberties for all.

The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living.

These are the simple, the basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The inner and abiding strength of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations.

Many subjects connected with our social economy call for immediate improvement. As examples:

We should bring more citizens under the coverage of old-age pensions and unemployment insurance.

We should widen the opportunities for adequate medical care.

We should plan a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it.

I have called for personal sacrifice, and I am assured of the willingness of almost all Americans to respond to that call. A part of the sacrifice means the payment of more money in taxes. In my budget message I will recommend that a greater portion of this great defense program be paid for from taxation than we are paying for today. No person should try, or be allowed to get rich out of the program, and the principle of tax payments in accordance with ability to pay should be constantly before our eyes to guide our legislation.”

Now THAT was a great man.

Yes, comrade! Almost as great as Lenin and Stalin. Greater, perhaps than Castro! Viva la revolution!

You calling FDR a communist? I really would like to know the answer to that.

What is the definition of delusional?

    • NEIL F. AGWD/BSD November 7, 2010 at 1:58 am #

      de·lu·sion n.
      de·lu·sion·al adj.

      b. The state of being deluded.
      2. A false belief or opinion: labored under the delusion that success was at hand.
      3. Psychiatry A false belief strongly held in spite of invalidating evidence, especially as a symptom of mental illness: delusions of persecution.

  3. paul wenum November 7, 2010 at 7:49 pm #

Neil, I know the definition. Thought our “Robbie Boy” would respond as he usually does. Thanks for the definition in detail.

  4. Rob N. Hood November 8, 2010 at 4:23 pm #

So you are all saying FDR was delusinonal even though he is the most re-elected Prez ever?

The angriest folks are the very most privileged. They are the white, male (mostly) seniors who came out in droves for the freak show calling itself the tea party. We know empirically from polling data that these folks are the very definition of demographic privilege. They’re wealthier than the rest of us. They’re in the majority and dominant race. They are the dominant, catered to and most privileged sex. They have been benefitting from all the goodies that liberalism has provided them for all their lives, most especially now as they bask in their Social Security and Medicare payouts. Oh, and one other thing. They’re furious. Furious at the injustices of the world, furious at the idea of sharing the fat bonanza they lucked into in the lottery of life, furious at a society that might have the audacity of compassion for this or that group that it has spent centuries, if not millennia, pummeling. That fury. The ironic fury of the hurl-inducing uber-selfish.

    • Dan McGrath November 8, 2010 at 5:16 pm #

Take a walk in reality sometime. Attend a tea party gathering. What I see at Tea Party events is a lot of hard working, struggling people trying to get ahead and support families. I see disabled veterans who served their country and paid a steep price defending us and now wonder if their sacrifice was in vain. I also see a lot of out of work people who are going under and are mad as hell at the bungled interference of the federal government that has led to economic collapse. Many, perhaps most of the local Tea Party groups are organized by women. Stop sucking down Maddow’s deluded caricatures of the Tea Party and go see for yourself because you are wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG.

Next yu’ll be saying you see dead people. What is see is brain-dead people.

As such generalizations are usually always wrong, but sometimes close enough to be right right right Right. Which I am am am AM!

Most middle class is suffering the same things and are angry. But we don’t come to the same conclusions as to whor or what is responsible for our woes. You people make all the wrong conclusions, which makes it that much harder for the lesser reality challenged to fix what is wrong- or at least try to.

You people are not only your own worst enemies you are second for the rest of us only to the corporate crooks who feed you the bull-crap you choose to believe. With your help, this country will continue to fall, and things will get unfortunately get much worse before you wake up to this reality. By then it will WAY to late of course- so again I say to you- thanks for nothing.

  6. paul wenum November 9, 2010 at 6:54 pm #

I can firmly state that you are not middle class. Sound like a young college kid that thinks, as you think, that he knows it all never ever experiencing life. Can see you as a member of ELF, PETA, et al. Your mindset will never change. Like talking to a blank stare. A waste of my time as well as others on this site.

  7. Rob N. Hood November 10, 2010 at 8:50 am #

I’m 48 years old, and not a member of either of those groups. None actually, other than being a registered Democrat. It is you who has an unbending mindset. But what I really want to know is about that picture at the top of this story. It’s Santa Claus without his beard and hat right? I always wondered what he really looked like under that ridiculous disguise. Thanks Dan.

BTW I have worked professionally for the all of the following groups: Corporate, County, State, Tribal, and Non-Profit, and for my parents’ small business. So I kinda know my way around these institutions and how they work and how they don’t. Just sayin’.

That’s Lord John Prescott. Those Brits still love their goofy robes and all the pomp.

At least I have my Kilt!

  9. Rob N. Hood November 12, 2010 at 4:40 pm #

I only sincerely hope Paul that you do not scare the living crap out of people and wear something under that kilt of yours.

And Dan I knew that- was just trying to be funny and to make fun of your sources. I mean come on, Lord this and Count that? Not very American of you!!! For shame!

Notice no comment on my resume… oh well. Too much reality for ya?

    Tea is the new Kool-aid.

The modern Republican party has one masterful, godlike skill unmatched by any other org in this century: Its leaders are geniuses at deceit, at leading throngs of blind believers into rabbit holes of war and fear and factual inaccuracy, often using an aggressively dumbed-down form of Christianity as a trump card. Sexual dread, mistrust of youth, of women, of gays, foreigners, of the ever-changing cultural landscape? It’s in the DNA. And the Tea Party chugged it like Coors-flavored heroin.

And the Dems? The Dems wish they could be that masterful. Progressives are just terribly weak in fearmongering. There is something about the liberal spirit that values independent thought and self-determination, that defies screaming eye-glazed megachurch groupthink dread. This makes it tough to hold power for very long. It’s so much easier to rally around sameness, conformity, institution, fear of the Other. Right, Karl?

Proof? Look no further than the GOP’s leaders and mouthpieces: Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, O’Reilly and Fox News and even newly minted Senate demigod Mitch McConnell, et al. There are almost no liberal equivalents to these professional liars, warmongers, kingmakers and overlords. In the category of media and message manipulation, the libs have proven disastrous.

I take it back. Not all red-leaning voters this election are hereby screwed. If you’re tremendously wealthy and/or run a very large corporation, you’re feeling damn good right about now. Wall Street is giddy like Charlie Sheen in a Bangkok brothel, eager for more deregulation, bigger bonuses, less oversight. The CEOs of every oil company in the world are positively orgasmic knowing that their GOP breathren will now asphyxiate all attempts at new environmental legislation and regulation. And so on.

But if you are a lower to middle-class Republican, Tea Partier or flip-flopping indie voter, you are now in the most delightfully ironic position of all — you think you just voted yourself more voice, when in fact you voted for far less. You think yourself a lion; you’re actually the meat. You actually just voted yourself an even lower position on the food chain. Congratulations.

But don’t worry. There is a bright spot ahead. 2012 is nigh, and a dramatic new vote simmers and looms, as it always does. Soon enough, it will shift and mutate all over again, and we can kickstart the eternal debate once more. Something to look forward to, no?

    Not.

well, back to the article – great news obama lacks the power to do anything now. people are sick of his marxist views and corrupt agendas. charging people for “carbon” is about as corrupt as it gets. people on the alarmist side have been proven to be corrupt and hypocrites. how many countless flights has al gore, obama, prince charles, etc. taken all over the world for fun as well as media face time to talk about the “evils” of carbon? screw ’em all, at least here, the people said “screw obama” on november 2nd.

the first chinks in the alarmist’s armor was when “global warming” was changed to “climate change” after numerous record cold temperatures worldwide. oops!!! when i see all you alarmists riding a bicycle to work in winter or carrying your groceries as you walk home in a thunderstorm, you’ll start to have a little more credibility. but as long as you drive a car or use electricity, you’re nothing more than the most vile, hypocritical, corrupt scum of the earth – you & your “movement” fail.

How much to you get paid for your posts? Very interested. Soro’s or the DNC? Just curious.

Comes straight from my patriotic heart free of charge or payment. Maybe you should ask Dan the same question.

I make about $37,000 a year as the executive director of Minnesota Majority, running this site (the least of my duties/projects) and others, including MinnesotaMajority.org, and ElectionIntegrityWatch.com as well as organizing volunteers and events, doing research, writing, media appearances, speaking, recording and engineering audio, shooting, producing and editing video among many other things. My salary is paid by donations from our members. My boss, Minnesota Majority’s president Jeff Davis works full time at Minnesota Majority as a volunteer – no compensation. We aren’t doing this for the money.

  13. Rob N. Hood November 14, 2010 at 1:39 pm #

This is for Dan. He had some trouble with it previously, the accurate history of the Nazis I mean:

The Nazi Party was not a traditional or “normal” political party. It was an extreme right-wing populist movement. Its name “National Socialist” was a deliberate deception; it had nothing to do with socialism. It was violently anti-socialist. It fed upon the discontent and insecurity primarily of the distressed middle classes and the rural population, hit hard by the depression. It made comparatively little inroad into the industrial working class. It claimed to be the defender of the “real German people” against various “alien” influences, such as “Bolsheviks” and the Jews, who were denounced as “unpatriotic” and “un-German” or “anti-German”. The social democrats were lumped together with the communists as “Marxists” – representatives of alien “Judeo-Bolshevism”. The militaristic spirit was extolled, with praise for the World War One “front-line soldiers” and the para-militaries of the S.A. Germany, they said, would be saved from the clutches of interest slavery and the financiers. The country, it was said, was being dragged down by scroungers, cheats and alien elements. Their appeal “Germany Arise” encouraged patriotic Germans to stand up and reclaim their country from the clutches of “the System”. Hitler was projected as the saviour in waiting.

But a party that in 1928 had been struggling to survive, could not have made the break-through it had made by 1932 with out substantial financial support. As the crisis deepened after 1930, a group of German industrialists associated with the “Industrie Klub” bankrolled Hitler. This was revealed in Fritz Thyssen’s “I Paid Hitler”. In the Reichstag election campaign of 1930 Hitler’s director of communications (propaganda chief) Josef Goebbels brilliantly utilised all the new communications media available at the time – Hugenberg’s press empire, film, radio and aircraft placed at the fuhrer’s disposal, enabling him to travel the length and breadth of the country addressing choreographed mass rallies at which he promised to sweep away the old, discredited system. No depths of scurrility in the character-assassination of the so-called “November criminals” who had betrayed Germany, was too base for Goebbels.

    Sound familiar?

  14. paul wenum November 15, 2010 at 10:15 pm #

Sounsd like “Obamamania” with “press, film, radio” (now the internet) circa 2008. History has a way of repeating itself doesn’t it? Doesn’t take three paras to see the similiarity.

  15. Hal Groar November 18, 2010 at 10:04 pm #

Yes, I see the Barry standing between the pillars promising everything, now his devotees are growing impatient and hostile. Yes Rob, that does sound familiar.

  16. Rob N. Hood November 19, 2010 at 8:59 am #

No- you are thinking of the war-hungry Bush II standing in front of his catch-phrase brainwashing background art- and of course the most famousof all- the “Mission Accomplished” on an aircraft carrier. It don’t get any more fascist than that folks.

Funny how you guys see the world almost the exact opposite of what it’s reality actually is. I find that fascinating and extremely disturbing. It’s like watching a horror show. Or a bad accident that you cannot help but trying to see, or can’t turn away from…

And Dan, if that is all you are getting paid (not bad but not very good either) you are getting chumped. I thought the Repubs were so famous for paying their minions well, to set an example if nothing else. At least they shouldnt’ be such cheapskates but then again it doesn’t surprise me. The Elite in charge hate the middle and lower classes, which is where they want to keep you. Subjugated and all that… The Koch brothers can surely afford to may you more. Just sayin’.
