Alarmists keep ringing the bell

richard-lindzenBy Dr. Richard Lindzen

In November last year a file appeared on the internet containing thousands of emails and other documents from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Britain. How this file got into the public domain is still uncertain, but the emails, whose authenticity is no longer in question, provided a startling view into the world of climate research.

In what has become known as Climategate, one could see unambiguous evidence of the unethical suppression of information and opposing viewpoints, and even data manipulation.

Moreover, the emails showed collusion with other prominent researchers in the US and elsewhere. The CRU supplies many of the authors for the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

One might have thought the revelations would discredit the science underlying proposed global warming policy. Indeed, the revelations may have played some role in the failure of last December’s Copenhagen climate conference to agree on new carbon emissions limits.

But with the political momentum behind policy proposals and billions in research funding at stake, the effect of the emails appears to have been small.

The general approach of the scientific community (at least in the US and Britain) has been to see whether people will bother to look at the files in detail (they mostly have not) and to wait until time diffuses the initial impressions to reassert the original message of a climate catastrophe that must be fought with widespread carbon control. This reassertion, however, continues to be suffused by illogic, nastiness and outright dishonesty.

There were, of course, the inevitable investigations of individuals such as Penn State University’s Michael Mann (who manipulated data to create the famous “hockey stick” climate graph) and Phil Jones (director of the CRU).

The investigations were brief, lacked depth and were conducted mainly by individuals already publicly committed to the popular view of climate alarm. The results were whitewashes that are incredible given the data.

Dr. Lindzen concludes with this: “One can only hope the climate alarmists will lose so we can go back to dealing with real science and real environmental problems such as assuring clean air and water.”
Isn’t that really the whole point? I mean, think about it, how much farther along would efforts to clean the air and water be if there wasn’t all this BS about climate change?
Rob is always talking about all the greedy corporations. What about the greed of companies in the climate change industry? Like GE, and Goldman Sachs? Ge is making money hand over fist building wind turbines, and Goldman Sachs is set to make billions of dollars from commissions trading carbon credits. Are they not just as greedy as oil company execs?
Let’s clean the air, and the water and dump this AGW theory into the dustbin.

    • Rob N. Hood April 24, 2010 at 8:48 pm #

Sure- they’re just as greedy (well maybe not just as much, but almost). So what’s your point? My point is and always has been: Large Multi-national companies are not good for us as individuals or as a country. You just helped me make that point.

G.Sachs did and continues to make millions- NOW, not just “set to” THEY ARE ALREADY DOING IT!!!!!!!!!!! So, again, I ask, what is your point? That they MIGHT make tons of money about something which you find insulting and so IF and WHEN that happens THEN you will be outraged???!!!!

      Alrighty then…!

      • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 25, 2010 at 8:45 am #

Point taken. No way to back out of that one. But I will say that I do not hold these companies in the same kind of contempt that you do. Even though we happen to agree on a single concept does not mean we arrived there on the same bus. I think IF these corporations are acting badly THEN they should be punished. Your view is that they ARE all acting badly, and so the whole system should be scrapped and replaced by a socialist system.
I don’t think we’ll be taking any long walks on the beach together holding hands anytime soon.
Now I think we would agree on cleaning the air, and water. You might be suprized by that but I never said there is no pollution. I have said that CO2 is not a pollutant, and that the quality of the air, and water have improved since the 70’s. But I do think there could be a lot of improvement. My position is what I stated above. I think the AGW theory is a red herring. I think the money that has been spent in the last 20 years on this lie would have been better spent developing cleaner ways of using the energy sources that we already have, and keeping harmful chemicals out of the air, and water. If you believed AGW was not true, would that not be your position? Hypothetically?

        • Rob N. Hood April 25, 2010 at 7:13 pm #

They don’t PRODUCE anything- they simply suck money out of a system that is created to allow them to do that. While you, me, and everyone esle not part of that elitist theivery struggle to pay the damn bills.

The money you are worried about (AGW) is PEANUTS comparatively speaking. What boggles my mind is the worry and energy spent on hypotheticals, when they are stealing from you, and me, RIGHT NOW- in many ways, some obvious some not so much.

          It’s called DISTRACTION.

          • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 25, 2010 at 10:38 pm #

You lost me. Who doesn’t produce anything?

  2. Rob N. Hood April 24, 2010 at 8:40 pm #

Here comes that SCARY “Liberal” Energy Bill…!!! (don’t worry- it’s Not a Liberal’s dream bill, as was VERY predictable).

Senator John Kerry said that the Edison Electric Institute—the main trade group representing utilities—will support their bi-partisan measure. “We are bringing to the table a significant group of players who were never there for the Waxman-Markey bill,” Kerry said. (While Edison supported Waxman-Markey, it was opposed by several big oil companies and API).

In the teleconference, organized by the We Can Lead coalition, Kerry outlined specific details from the bill that have not previously been publicly available. Here’s a rundown:

The bill would remove the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act, and the states’ authority to set tougher emissions standards than the federal government.

There will be no fee—or “gas tax”—on transportation fuels. Instead, oil companies would also be required to obtain pollution permits but will not trade them on the market like other polluters. How this would work is not yet clear.

Agriculture would be entirely exempt from the cap on carbon emissions.

Manufacturers would not be included under a cap on greenhouse gases until 2016.

The bill would provide government-backed loan guarantees for the construction of 12 new nuclear power plants.

It will contain at least $10 billion to develop technologies to capture and store emissions from coal-fired power plants.
There will be new financial incentives for natural gas.

The bill would place an upper and lower limit on the price of pollution permits, known as a hard price collar. Businesses like this idea because it ensures a stable price on carbon. Environmental advocates don’t like the idea because if the ceiling is set too low, industry will have no financial incentive to move to cleaner forms of energy.

The energy bill passed by the Energy and Natural Resources Committee last year will be adopted in full. This measure has sparked concerns among environmentalists for its handouts to nuclear and fossil fuel interests.

Some elements of the legislation remain in flux, Kerry said. The senators still haven’t figured out how to deal with the contentious question of offshore drilling. He added that they are still trying to secure the support of the Chamber of Commerce, another prime foe of the House measure, but remain hopeful that the powerful business lobby might endorse the bill.

The bottom line. The billionaire Cap and trade people will make billions off nothing. Trading carbon credits? I must pay to breath? Give me, as well as others a break. When will they pull the curtain up on the Wizard? Gore and his minions? Oh, that’s right, “there is too much “invested” to back off a lie!

  4. cubanshamoo April 25, 2010 at 1:29 am #

Tougher emmisions standards without public gas tax? Who could believe it? Only you Rob, who believe in Obama. If that bill keep this form is just directed against national Oil Companies. In other words, it seem written by Dwayne Andreas of ADM (Decatur Illinois). Smell bad Rob, smell very bad.

  5. Hal Groar April 25, 2010 at 12:17 pm #

I think we can wait them out until the Nov. election. I think with what Arizona did, spooking Barry’s administration into immigration talks, will effectively tie them up too long. This will allow nothing to be done on the carbon front until after the election and by then he won’t have the support needed to force it through. The populace is against it and have made it clear. (As if that matters to Barry) Thats my take, what do you think guy’s? Am I being too optimistic?

    • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 25, 2010 at 3:20 pm #

I really hope you are right about that.

  6. Rob N. Hood April 25, 2010 at 3:01 pm #

You guys are either real dense or very paranoid. I don’tn exactly blame you on the latter disfunction, but Obama hasn’t lied about 1/1000 what Bush did within the same time period (don’t even try to pull the 9-11 thing out, because that actually saved Bush’s dumb ass) . Oh well…. I guess that doesn’t matter.

The above outline, if accurate, is VERY business friendly and a big concession once again re: what environmentalists say we need. And so it goes- your side basically gets Everything it wants- and you guys still aren’t happy. What’s wrong with this picture??

  7. Hal Groar April 25, 2010 at 5:40 pm #

Rob, I didn’t want health care, I didn’t want bailouts (including the Bush one’s) I don’t want the country bankrupt. How on earth do you figure we get everything we want? I am not sure what you think Bush lied about, odds are it is war related, but I have not said Barry has lied either. Actually Obama has been up front about being a socialist, without admitting it. I have not felt betrayed by Barry because he was saying “Spread the wealth” on the campaign trail. Only a fool would not have known what his plans were. I strongly disagree with his plans, that is why I did not vote for him. Now the issue at hand is how to stop cap’n’trade and stop Barry himself from destroying the only bastion of hope on this earth.

    • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 25, 2010 at 10:41 pm #

And Rob now sticks his fingers in his ears and says “na na na nana evil corporations, na na na nana, global warming, na na na nana elitists pigs sucking the life out of us!!!!”

  8. paul wenum April 25, 2010 at 11:08 pm #

We are as “dense” as the Lincoln Memorial.”

  9. Rob N. Hood April 26, 2010 at 7:42 am #

Those who should have been leading this country, and contributing to its development, have spent the past 30 years joining the parade of looters and predators who have found ways to extract wealth from the middle class and the poor in this country.

They’re all the same. Don’t you get it?!

    I guess not.

    • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 26, 2010 at 8:57 pm #

Then run for office and do something about it! Why do you come here and whine and moan about all the looters, and predators? The things you say are just so outrageous. It’s all hyperbole and demonization. Do you have anything positive to say about anyone?

      • Rob N. Hood April 27, 2010 at 7:02 am #

I’ve explained all that too, ad nauseum. The game is rigged, it’s all about great gobs of money, and who can get it and from whom. You guys really don’t pay attention, or have the ability to learn anything new, that doesn’t spew from the Right.

And no, I have little good to say about our political system now. They’re all crooked, thanks to legalized bribery that has taken the place of democracy. And neither would you if you could see straight.

        • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 29, 2010 at 6:56 am #

          Excuses, excuses.

  10. paul wenum April 26, 2010 at 8:48 pm #

Really? Wait until VAT and AMT hits you as others in the “middle class” like all of us are at present. Only when you lose your entitlements and pay taxes will you understand. The poor don’t pay taxes and possibly not you? I have no idea. I pay my fair share. By the way, what is “Middle Class in dollars earned per family? You always duck the question just like Obama. Give me an exact answer or can’t you cut and paste that as well? I’m sure there are sources? I anticipate your fast response. Looking forward to your factual answer. Can’t wait.

  11. Rob N. Hood April 27, 2010 at 7:05 am #

I’ve answered those questions, several time, already. you just don’t like the answers I give so you keep asking.

And when all of our taxes go up, you can thank 8 years of unprecedented criminal behavior all from the Right. And then when obama and the Dems get things above water again, the Right can take over and steal it all, again. Clinton had to do the dirty work for the Right also, after then unprecedented deficits from Poppy and Ronnie.

Do you NOT see a pattern here???

  12. paul wenum April 27, 2010 at 9:29 pm #

Just where on this real earth do you get your supposed facts? Man, you are a work of art. You are an excellent minion for your Master.

  13. Rob N. Hood April 28, 2010 at 7:53 am #

you’re blind- and it ain’t rocket science

  14. paul wenum April 28, 2010 at 6:36 pm #

I do have glasses but I don’t have “blinders” like others like you.

Clinto make the dirty job? Monika was looking a clean woman to me…..

  16. Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 29, 2010 at 10:58 am #

It was Bush’s and Reagan’s fault? I thought they were all the same Rob. Reagan, Bush(I), Clinton, Bush(II), Obama. All the same!. All corrupt marionettes of the elite oligarchy. Can’t have it both ways Rob. They are either all the same, and share the blame. Or there IS a difference between the parties.
You talk out of both sides of your (three letter word I can’t say or Dan will delete it, hint: it is the part of your body you sit with), and expect us to respect what you say. So which is it Rob? Were they all in the pocket of elite oligarcs, or was Reagan and the Bushies fools, and Clinton and Obama cool? Can’t have it both ways Rob.

  17. Rob N. Hood April 29, 2010 at 11:41 am #

You are just twisting my words to serve your purposes. Yes, they are all basically the SAME. But some have been worse than others….THUS I’VE BEEN VOTING DEM ALL THESE YEARS!!!!- THE LESSER EVIL (get it? I sure hope so!) Sheeesh Neil…. you wan’t to fit everything into your nice little black and white categories, as usual, and nothing in this world fits that nicely. Start opening your mind to REALITY. It might help.

    • Neil F. AGWD/BSD April 30, 2010 at 9:49 pm #

I’m not twisting your words. You’re the one that said they are all the same, and now you are saying they’re not. You are the one that keeps saying there is no difference between the political parties, yet you obviously believe there is. Otherwise you would vote for the independance party or the socialist party or whatever. But I forgive you Rob, you’re a Democrat, and that’s what Democrats do…they lie.

  18. paul wenum April 29, 2010 at 10:51 pm #

It’s called “Right and Wrong” my friend. Not “Black and White.”

  19. Rob N. Hood April 30, 2010 at 10:41 am #

Ah huh… like I said… you helped make my point, again.

You can’t argue for free markets and still fight for the giant companies. Those positions are mutually exclusive. You can’t paint the picture of an agrarian past and then serve the giant corporations. The fact is, the American dream can’t survive without regulation. Without it, the powerful will always crush a free market where the little guy has a chance to make it. It’s like the old Western movies and dime store novels, but this time with an unhappy ending: The giant ranchers will always drive out the independent cowboys. The combines will always throttle Main Street business. The frontier will always be fenced. The railroad will always destroy the town.

And those who speak up for giant, faceless, unethical forces will always be what they’ve been in Western movies and dime store novels from time immemorial:

    The bad guys.

  20. paul wenum May 3, 2010 at 9:20 pm #

    Whatever.

  21. Rob N. Hood May 4, 2010 at 7:40 am #

Your attitide is very typical of the average American, unfortunately. Someday our ancestors (f we have any that is) will laugh at our stupidity. That is- after their forebears survive all the pollution and over-population, the oil wars, and the water and food wars, etc. etc.

  22. Rob N. Hood May 4, 2010 at 3:45 pm #

When out of power in recent years, the Republicans haven’t even pretended to cooperate with Democrats; instead, the GOP and its media allies have set out to make Washington ungovernable. The incivility is not just some naturally occurring phenomenon; it is a conscious strategy for regaining power.

The Republicans know that the American people will quickly grow weary of all the political bickering that surrounds Democratic control and thus will return power to the Republicans, who further recognize that the defeated Democrats will then bend over backwards to work with Republicans on achieving some normal level of governance.

So, there is a rational calculation for cranking up the volume of the Right’s noise machine to popularize ugly smears against leading Democrats, such as the baseless accusations about Obama being born in Kenya and his supposedly secret Muslim allegiances. This is disinformation in the style of what CIA covert operators spread against targeted leaders of enemy regimes.

Given the Right’s massive investment in media – stretching from newspapers, magazines and books to radio, TV and the Internet – the disinformation soon takes on the ring of truth. Millions of Americans come to believe the lies and then help spread them further.

  23. paul wenum May 4, 2010 at 10:39 pm #

Republicans haven’t cooperated with Democrats? Do you read? Democrats closed door meetings with no republicans allowed, no discourse accepted by the Republicans, nothing accepted by the present administration of any sound idea by the opposition party. Now that is real bipartisanship promised by Pres. Obama. Oh, that’s right. “We will have a transparent administration when I’m elected.” It is “Apparent” that “Transparent” is folly and not fact and will never happen with this socialistic administration. Typical political discourse to fool the public that voted for “CHANGE.” Yes, change that will affect our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. The definition of “Change” today is a socialistic society that is slowly taking America down a path that we have never taken before and I sense that the leader of the path has full knowledge of where that path takes us. Just will not tell us until it is too late. Thank God there is 2012 coming up as well as this 2010. It is time for a “Change,” called voting your conscience for once in your natural born life!

  24. Rob N. Hood May 5, 2010 at 6:53 am #

You’re living in your own dream world. What is posted above is very accurate as to what and why. It actually is a smart strategy. But it’s very unAmerican, but that never stopped the Repubs in the past anyway from doing what they do. Most of what they do is unAmerican.

  25. paul wenum May 5, 2010 at 9:33 pm #

If I, as well as others that believe in freedom and no socialistic society, are Anti-American? Than I guess in your socialistic mind we are. Man, have you ever got it in reverse. “Hello, Hello? Is anybody there?” Freedom is the most precious asset you have my friend!

  26. Rob N. Hood May 15, 2010 at 8:27 pm #

I sometimes wonder what kind of world this would/could be if humans really used their brains and their hearts the way God intended. I will never know, because based upon what I’ve seen and heard humans have a long way to go yet to evolve to that level.

It’s sad, because it’s such a waste. Greed has always been the greatest God, and humans cannot resist, it even blinds those that are its victims.

  27. paul wenum May 15, 2010 at 9:37 pm #

A valid earned income no matter how much you make puts food on your table my friend. It has always been that way from the beginning of time. I come from a family of 10 being fed three times a day. You know something? My mother/father worked hard with no “Hand out” no Entitlements. They never looked for a “bailout from Big Brother, they earned it and dealt with reality of existence of what they had. Knowing that you have multiple jobs, I respect you for that, My parents did the same. Give me your explanation of “Greed.” I’d love to hear it. Finally, glad to see you use God with a Capital G.

Work Shall Make You Free… right Paul? Sounds vaguely familiar…. hmmmm.

  29. Dan May 16, 2010 at 11:31 pm #

You are referring to the german phrase, Arbeit Macht Frei, I presume – the phrase that emblazoned the gates at Auschwitz. It’s a mind-twisting leap you’ve taken. I’m increasingly convinced you are being deliberately obtuse.

  30. paul wenum May 17, 2010 at 12:34 am #

Dan, I’ve been to “Auschwitz.” and it makes you sick to your stomach! Have you????? My comments were not intended the way you took it! I didn’t read German when I was there. Your comments personally offend me. By the way, Work is good. Is there a problem with that????? Rob will have a field day won’t he????? Take care.

  31. Dan McGrath May 17, 2010 at 9:16 am #

Paul – my comment was directed at Rob N. Hood who seems to have leapt from your post about the value of work to Nazism. Arbeit Macht Frei basically means work will make you free.

  32. paul wenum May 18, 2010 at 9:46 pm #

Sorry Dan for my reaction. Having been in Germany and personally seeing the atrocities, I read your comment as if directed to me. If you have ever been there it wakes you up as to what a society/fascist can do to their own people. I believe off memory, there were 16 or 26 places? One is to many! Let’s never let it happen again. Enough said.
